Shanghai Port’s container throughput ranks first in the world for 14 consecutive years
According to a report on the website of Singapore's "Lianhe Zaobao" on January 3, China's Shanghai Port has ranked first in the world in container throughput for 14 consecutive years.
Chinese media quoted SIPG as saying that Shanghai Port's container throughput exceeded the 49 million TEU (standard unit) mark in 2023, ranking first in the world for the 14th consecutive year.
According to reports, Shanghai Port’s container routes cover more than 700 ports in more than 200 countries and regions around the world, with more than 320 liner departures and departures every week. Shanghai has also become the world's first port with liquefied natural gas (LNG) offshore bunkering capabilities, and together with the Port of Los Angeles, has created the world's first trans-Pacific green shipping corridor.
According to reports, while container throughput reached a new high, the number of international sailing ships entering and exiting Shanghai ports increased simultaneously. Taking Yangshan Port as an example, according to statistics from the Yangshan Entry-Exit Border Inspection Station, in 2023, the station inspected more than 9,640 international navigation ships entering and exiting the port, an increase of 7% compared with 2022.
According to news recently released by the Ministry of Transport of China, in the first 11 months of 2023, China's ports completed cargo throughput of 15.51 billion tons, a year-on-year increase of 8.4%, of which domestic and foreign trade throughput increased by 7.9% and 9.6% respectively.
